Reasons for Taking

An increasing number of athletes are using CBD due to its ability to bind to the TRPV-1 receptor, mediating pain perception, inflammation and body temperature.

This is in preference to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen, which may have harmful effects with prolonged and sustained use.

Athletes are also starting to use CBD to aid relaxation and sleep. By directly activating the 5-HT1A (hydroxytryptamine) serotonin receptor, CBD can bring about a calming effect on the body. This can be a key differentiator for any athlete, whether before a big competition or before sleep.

As we all know, a good sleep is king. At an anatomical level, sleep has knock-on effects that increase recovery and performance overall.

World Anti-Doping Agency

All natural and synthetic cannabinoids are prohibited except for cannabidiol (CBD)

United States Anti-Doping Agency

In 2019, WADA exempted cannabidiol (CBD) from this category. However, all other cannabinoids, whether natural or synthetic, are prohibited in-competition.

Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a non-psychoactive derivative of cannabis. As of 2019, WADA no longer lists CBD as a prohibited substance.

ASDMAC reminds athletes that CBD oil often still contains some concentration of the banned substance tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Therefore, the use of CBD oil is at an athlete’s own risk and could be considered akin to the use of a supplement.  Assessment of the risk of any supplement can be made through the Sport Integrity Australia app.

International Journal of Sports Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism – review of CBD in Rugby

One major issue with rugby is daily muscle pain, particularly nerve pain, which has psychological and physical consequences. CBD in rugby could massively reduce the reliance on painkillers. Rugby players use approximately four times more painkillers than the general population on average. Apart from addiction, consistent use of such drugs could lead to adverse effects, including nausea, headaches, kidney damage, gastric ulceration, and gastric injury. In contrast, CBD has a significantly better safety profile.

A remarkable 67% of players claimed they saw a benefit from consuming cannabidiol. Over 40% reported better sleep, and 14% said they felt improved pain/recovery. In the studies reviewed, none of the athletes reported any adverse side effects.

From Olympic Weight Lifting to Crossfit, there is a huge amount of stress that these sports have on the body that requires constant mediation with anti-inflammatories and recovery aids. CBD moderates these functions in a natural manner so athletes do not rely on overuse of NSAIDs.

The USA Weightlifting team has signed a partnership with a CBD company to provide tested and quality products to their athletes as they compete under the USA banner.

Pure Spectrum CBD was the main sponsor of the 2018 Reebok CrossFit Games.

An increasing number of professionals are using CBD to maximise their recovery, reduce anxiety and improve concentration. Specifically for golf CBD can support better sleep before early tee times, optimising focus when heading to a playoff in a Major and eliminating nagging injuries, aches and pain as they get older.

Bubba Watson, Multiple Major Champion, with victories at the Masters Tournament in 2012 and 2014.

“So for me it was about how I create longevity in the game of golf and spending time with my kids running around. CBD was easily a fit for me”
